Liquitex Clear Gesso is a professional acrylic primer designed to prepare surfaces while preserving the appearance of the underlying substrate. It creates a transparent, matte, high-tooth surface that enhances paint adhesion, stability, and long-term durability without covering the natural look of canvas, wood, or other supports. It stiffens flexible surfaces, improves absorbency for paint application, and provides a reliable archival base for acrylic, oil, charcoal, and pencil work.
For best results, apply undiluted or thin with up to 25% water; if further thinning is required, mix water with Liquitex Matte Medium to maintain film strength. Lightly sand smooth or glossy surfaces before application, then apply a thin, even coat using a wide flat brush, avoiding overbrushing, and allow at least 24 hours to dry before painting. Additional coats can be sanded between layers to refine the surface. For oil painting, apply 2–4 coats for maximum protection and durability. It can also be tinted with transparent or semi-opaque acrylic color for a subtle custom tone while maintaining its clear finish.
