Liquitex Gesso is a professional acrylic primer designed to prepare surfaces for painting by creating a high-tooth, archival base that improves color adhesion and long-term stability. It dries to a matte, opaque white finish that stiffens canvas and provides an ideal absorbent surface for acrylics, oils, and dry media such as charcoal and pencil. As a high-quality artist primer, it ensures durability and helps prevent flaking or separation over time, supporting the longevity of finished artworks.
For best results, apply undiluted or thin with up to 25% water; if further thinning is needed, mix water with Liquitex Matte Medium to maintain film strength. Before application, lightly sand any hard or glossy surfaces, then apply a thin, even coat using a wide flat brush and allow it to dry for at least 24 hours. Additional coats can be sanded between layers to achieve a smoother finish. For oil painting surfaces, apply 2–4 coats for optimal protection. It can also be tinted with acrylic color, with Soft Body Acrylic recommended for the most consistent mixture.
